Abstract
The number of multicultural adolescents is increasing. Therefore, it is necessary to examine the life satisfacton of multicultural adolescents. Life satisfaction level among those adolescents was particularly low in their middle school years. This study conducted a longitudinal study using a latent growth model, The data used here are from the the fourth to sixth waves (which cover middle-school years) of a national survey of multicultural adolescents. It was found that depression and social withdrawal of multicultural adolescents in the first year in middle school were statistically significant negative (-) factors affecting self-esteem and achievement motivation. In other words, as the school years advance, depression and social withdrawal, and subsequently, self-esteem and achievement motivation decrease.
However, self-esteem and achievement motivation in the first year in middle school have a positive (+) effect on life satisfaction, and as the school years advance, self-esteem and life satisfaction increase. Self-esteem and achievement motivation were found to be variables that had a mediating effect on life satisfaction in the first year of middle school. Even if depression and social withdrawal in the first year of middle school are high, it is judged that having high self-esteem and achievement motivation will increase life satisfaction. Based on these analysis results, this study makes the following suggestions. Since multicultural adolescents spend most of their time at school, it is necessary to provide a school environmental and educational services to increase their school life satisfaction, and to improve self-esteem and achievement motivation through project classes. In addition to counseling that emphasizes the importance of emotional support at home and school and helps psychological adaptation, support or community should be linked to various activities and programs. In addition, the findings of this study recommend that increased support is provided under the current policy on at-risk youth, so as to help multicultural adolescents form a positive self-concept in their school years.
